"كان إمام مغنيا يملك صوتا ممتلئا بعناصر الطرب كلها، وكان يعمل نجارا فى ورشة صغيرة، يملكها فى أحد الأحياء البعيدة، كان يدق مسمارا أو مسمارين فى الصباح على طاولة أو كرسى، أو خزانة، وينفق باقى اليوم فى تلحين القصائد التى تناثرت داخل الورشة، وكان مألوفا جدا أن ترى عددا من زبائنه، يسألون بغضب عن أغراضهم التى مضى عليها زمن طويل وما زالت مجرد خشب، فى أحد الأيام زرته فى ورشته، أعطيته قصيدة كتبتُها لفتاة جميلة وأرادت أن تسمعها مغناة" فطلب مني أن احضر شاياً من مقهى قريب و أعود ,وحين عدت بعد عدة دقائق كان يسمعني قصيدتي ملحنة بصورة لم أصدقها . وفي يوم زودته بخامات الخشب وطلبت منه طاولة جديدة لعيادتي التي سأفتتحها قريباً فلم أستلم تلك الطاولة ابداً .
