قال الله تعالى : ((أَلا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ الله لا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ * الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ))
فقد بين القرآن أولياء الله بياناً شافياً : إنهم الذين جمعوا بين الإيمان والتقوى وصفاتهم الخوف من الله، والإقبال على ما يحبه و يرضاه، والإعراض عن كل ما سواه.
أولياء الله: هم العارفون برب البريات، المواظبون على الطاعات، المجتنبون للمعاصي والسيئات والمعرضون عن الانهماك في اللذات والشهوات).
وسمي ولياً: لأنه يتولى عبادة الله على الدوام، أو لأن الله تعالى تولّاه برحمته ولطفه وعنايته. قال تعالى: {ألا إن أولياء الله لا خوف عليهم ولا هم يحزنون. الذين آمنوا وكانوا يتقون. لهم البشرى في الحياة الدنيا وفي الآخرة لا تبديل لكلمات الله ذلك هو الفوز العظيم} [يونس: 62-63-64]
