أراد المؤلف من هذه المحاولة في التاريخ أن تكون "مقدمة" في متناول فريقين من الناس: طلاب التاريخ العربي، والقراء من عامة الناس الذين يبغون الوقوف على الحركات الدينية والسياسية وغيرها من الحركات الثقافية التي ظهرت في التاريخ العربي عبر سير القادة الذين صنعوا هذا التاريخ. إن الذين صنعوا التاريخ العربي- أو الذين صنعوا أي تاريخ لأمة أخرى- كانوا هم من صنع التاريخ. إنهم كانوا من نتاج الحركات المائجة الثائرة، غير أنهم كانوا ممن اعتلى متن أمواجها العارمة، فأمسكوا بالأعنة ليكبحوا جمحها أو ليشقوا لها طريقاً تسلكه. هؤلاء هم مبتدعو تقاليد أمتهم، وبناة أسلوبها في العيش الكريم. إن المادة التي اعتمدها في هذه الدراسة مستمدة من المصادر الأولية، بعد مقابلتها بنتائج الأبحاث العلمية التي قام بها علماء في الشرق والغرب. فقد استفاد من المادة التي أصبتها في كتبه السابقة: "تاريخ العرب" و"تاريخ سورية"، و"تاريخ لبنان"، و"تاريخ الشرق الأدنى".
