إن جمع الأخبار ووصف الأحداث التي حدثت عبر العصور التاريخية في البقعة التي نعرفها الآن بالجمهورية اللبنانية، وذكر المآثي المجيدة والخدمات الجلى التي قدمتها الشعوب المتتالية التي توطنت لبنان إلى الحضارة الإنسانية، نقول، إن جمع هذه الأخبار الخطيرة وتدوين هذه الأحداث ذات المغزى التاريخي في قصة واحدة متسلسلة محاولة جريئة يقوم بها المؤرخ. إن لهذه المنطقة، إلى حد بعيد شخصية خاصة بها فرضتها طبيعتها الجبلية وقربها من البحر واتجاهها نحو الغرب وخصائص ساكنيها.
وقد يتساءل امرؤ عن معنى قولنا "أخبار خطيرة وأحداث ذات مغزى تاريخي" ما دام الكلام عن بلد صغير كلبنان،فنقول إن الأحداث التي لها صلة وثيقة بما يجري في لبنان المعاصر، والأحداث التي كان لها أثر في السياسة العالمية لأحداث على جانب عظيم من الخطورة وعليه فقد انتقى المؤرخ من أخبار التاريخ، وفسر منها تلك الأمور التي يحسبها على غاية من الأهمية لتعليل مشاكل المنطقة المعاصرة ولتفهم الأحداث الجارية ولربطها بالشؤون العالمية. أما في الأعصر القديمة فقد كانت أحداث لبنان التاريخية وثيقة الصلة بتاريخ مصر وبابل وأشور وبلاد الكلدان وفارس ومقدونيا وروما.
أما في العصور المتوسطة فقد كان تاريخ لبنان جزءاً من تاريخ البيزنطيين وتاريخ العرب المسلمين، أما في العصور الحديثة فقد كان تاريخية جزءاً من تاريخ الأتراك العثمانيين والافرنسيين. فقصة لبنان عبر التاريخ إذن قصة العالم المتمدن، ولكن على نطاق صغير. إن المادة التاريخية في هذا المؤلف مستقاة بالدرجة الأولى من المصادر الأولية، ومعززة بآخر ما توصل إليه البحث التاريخي. غير أن عرض هذه الحقائق يهدف إلى وضعها في متناول طلاب التاريخ وفي متناول القراء العاديين لا الاخصائيين في التاريخ. وليست هذه البقعة من الأرض التي يعنى المؤلف بتاريخها غريبة عنه. فهي الموطن الأول الذي نشأ فيه، والذي لم ينقطع عن زيارته له أو عن الاتصال المستمر بأهله. وإذا كان الزعم بأن معرفة الماضي ضرورة حتمية لفهم الحاضر فلا شك إن معرفة الحاضر معرفة حسنة، وعن كتب ضرورة لفهم الماضي وإدراك معنى الأحداث التاريخية إدراكاً واعياً.
