في باريس، كانت تألف وجوهاً كثيرة، لكنهم لا يعنون لها شيئاً، الأشجار في قمة فتنتها، الحمائم تهدل في سواقي حبوب الطلع الزاغب والراكد فوق الأرصفة، كانت النديفات البيضاء تتطاير حولها، وبعد ظهيرة ذلك اليوم في المكتبة، عندما كانت تتطاير هي بنفس الطريقة، قالت وداعاً تجسدها.
كانت تنبعث من الطريق رائحة الحضرة المنعشة وتنجرف فوق نهر موسكوفا تشكيلة من جذوع الأشجار، بدأت مغامرة الإكتشاف تثير حماسه وتخيفه، أن ينجح أو أن يصبح شخصاً مهماً، لم يبال بذلك قط.
لو لم تنذر أمه نفسها بتصميم كي يتابع دراسته لأكتفى حقيقة بأصل والديه: معلمان تحت شمس بروفانس، كان يخيل إليه بأن حقيقة وجوده ونفسه لا تنتمي إليه، إنها متناثرة بشكل غامض عبر الأرض كلها، ولمعرفتها كان يجب مساءلة الأزمنة والأماكن.
لهذا السبب كان يحب التاريخ والرحلات، لقد كانت مقاربة بلد مجهول طافح بوفرته الحية وعيش كل ما يمكنه أن يعرف عنه، كان ذلك يشعره بالدوار.
