تدور أحداث الرواية حول سميرة يعقوب، أم مكلومة تفقد ابنها عمر بطريقة مأساوية، ليس بالموت ولكن بفقدان ذاكرته نتيجة تدخلات الدكتور جلال، الطبيب النفسي الماكر الذي استغل ثقة العائلة به.
تتوالى الأحداث في أجواء مشحونة بالغموض والرعب النفسي، حيث تسعى سميرة لاكتشاف الحقيقة وراء ما حدث لابنها، لتتداخل الخيوط بينها وبين شخصيات متعددة مثل جيهان ونجلاء ويوسف، ولكل منهم أجندته الخاصة وعلاقته بالجريمة أو بالضحايا.
يتضح لاحقًا أن الدكتور جلال متورط في عدة جرائم قتل وتلاعبات نفسية، بدوافع مركبة بين الانتقام، والحب المريض، والاضطرابات النفسية المتأصلة منذ الطفولة، خاصة في علاقته المشوهة بسميرة التي كان يراها "أمًا مثالية" وخذلته حين اختارته ضحية.
تتصاعد الأحداث حتى تصل الرواية إلى ذروتها عندما تقرر سميرة الانتقام بنفسها، وتُقدِم على قتل جلال في مكتبه. ورغم انتقامها، فإن الألم لا ينتهي، فاختارت أن تعاقب نفسها بفقدان ذاكرتها بإرادتها، كي لا تعيش مأساة رؤية ابنها عاجزًا في كبره، كما عاش هو فاقدًا لذاته في صغره.
