سلفیت، بيآنكه بر گروه يا جماعت مشخصي از پيشينيان اطلاق شود، به مفهوم همه گذشتگاني است كه داراي تقدم زماني هستند؛ يعني در گذشته به دنيا آمده و رفتهاند؛ حال چه خوب و نيكوكار بودهاند و چه بد و بدكار. اما وقتي از سلف صالح بحث ميشود، منظور صحابه، تابعين و نسل نيكي هستند كه پس از آنها آمده و از آنان بهخوبي پيروي كردهاند. سلفي، بدين معنا نيست كه هر آن كس كه خود را به سلف منسوب ميكند، حتما پيرو منهج و روش آنان است؛ از اينرو سلفيت، گروه و يا جماعت خاصي نيستند؛ چنانكه سلفيت بر خلاف پندار برخي مرحلهي زماني ويژهاي نيست كه آمده و گذشته باشد. بلكه سلفيت، به معناي پيروي از سلف صالح در تعامل با كتاب خدا و سنت رسول الله صلی الله علیه وآله وسلم ميباشد
