تتناول الرواية السقوط المروع للإنسان حينما يتجاوز الغدر طاقة احتماله العقلية، متمثلة في رحلة "يحيى"، المهندس الناجح الذي كان يبني "قصور الأحلام" للآخرين، لينتهي به المطاف في "سكة المجاذيب" يبني بيتاً من الكرتون على أرصفة الشوارع. تسلط القصة الضوء على التحول الدراماتيكي في حياة البطل، وكيف يمكن لـ "كلمة واحدة" أو خيبة أمل عاطفية من "سلمى" أن تحول مهندساً دقيقاً إلى "شحات ذكرى" فاقداً للصلة بالواقع.
تستعرض الرواية الوجه الآخر لمدينة القاهرة؛ وجه المهمشين والمكسورين الذين يبيتون تحت الكباري، بعيداً عن صخب الأضواء. هي رحلة "وجع" تبدأ برمز الارتباط (الدبلة) وتنتهي بالضياع على الرصيف، مستكشفةً المسافة الفاصلة بين العقل والجنون، وبين الجنة التي وعِد بها البطل واللعنة التي حلت به، مؤكدةً أن وجع الروح قد "يلحس العقل" ويترك صاحبه هائماً في ملكوت لا رجوع منه.
