كاتبة كندية وُصِفَت أعمالها بأنها أحدثت ثورة في بنية القصة القصيرة.
وعلى مدار حياتها المهنية الحافلة، حازت مونرو العديد من الجوائز، منها جائزة نوبل في الأدب عام ٢٠١٣م عن أعمالها باعتبارها «سيدة فن الأقصوصة الأدبي المعاصر»، وجائزة «مان بوكر» الدولية عام ٢٠٠٩م عن أعمالها القصصية التي ألفتها على مدار مشوارها الإبداعي.
وتتميز قصص مونرو بأنها تستكشف الجوانب الإنسانية المعقدة بأسلوب نثري بسيط.

في القصة الأولى، نُقابِل زوجةً شابَّة وأُمًّا تعاني من ألمٍ لا يُطاق بعدما فقدتْ أطفالها الثلاثة، لكنها تستمدُّ العزاء من مصدرٍ غير متوقَّعٍ على الإطلاق. وفي قصةٍ أخرى تتصالح امرأةٌ مع خيانةٍ مُوجِعة من الماضي عبْر عملٍ أدبي تجمعها به صدفةٌ بحتة. وتكشف قصصٌ أخرى عن الفجوات السحيقة التي قد تتخلل العلاقاتِ الزوجية، والقسوة غير المتصوَّرة للأبناء، والأخطار الخفية في أماكنَ كنا نظن أنها هادئة ومألوفة. وأخيرًا — في القصة التي تحمل المجموعةُ عنوانَها — تَمزج أليس مونرو التاريخ بالخيال ببراعةٍ في حكايتها عن عالِمة رياضيات وروائيةٍ روسية من القرن التاسع عشر.
