كان رائف عضوا بجمعية الإخوان المسلمين والتي كانت وقتها نادي إجتماعي ولم يكن ينتمي تنظيميا للإخوان لذلك كان يدخن السجائر ولما تم حل الجمعية تم القبض على جميع أعضائها ومنهم الأستاذ أحمد رائف ولما خرج من السجن قرر أن يكتب ما شاهده، واعتقل في 25 أغسطس 1965.

كتاب سراديب الشيطان صفحات من تاريخ الإخوان المسلمين تأليف أحمد رائف يندرج تحت نوعية أدب السجون .يروي فيه أحمد رائف قصته كشاهد عيان على ما كان يحدث من تعذيب في السجون خلال فترة الستينيات . وكذلك شهادته على الأحداث السياسية خلال هذه الفترة و الصراع بين عبد الناصر و الإخوان لفرض الهيمنة و كيفية صعودهما معا . كذلك يتحدث عن أسلوب القمع و كيفية المعيشة في المعتقل و ما كان يلقاه المعتقلون من تعذيب وتجويع.
