النص عند هيرمان هيشه يحضر فيه التأمل بكثافة، وفعل الرحيل؛ ولكن بالمغردة والصورة، فالمغردة تهاجر مع هيشه إلى عالم المقدس، عبر انتقالات شاسعة (روحية) نحو ولادة جديدة، هذه الرحلة هي التي يتتبعها الروائي مع بطله الذي يدعي "سدهارتا" الإبن الوسيم للإبراهيمي، مع صديقه غوفندا اللذان مارسا معاً فن التأمل الروحي والإستغراق في التفكير، لغاية عليا هي الغوص في أعماق الكينونة، الخالدة، والمتوحدة مع الكون.
والرواية في مضمونها تقترب من تعاليم بوذا، وتدور في عالم بوذي، وتسلط الضوء على المفاهيم الأساسية للفلسفة الهندوسية بما تعنيه "وصف جوهر الشخصية الخالد الذي يبقى بعد الموت والذي يتقمص في حياة أو يتحرر من قيود الوجود" وهذا كان حال بطل الرواية الذي بدأ يحس ببذور عدم الرضا في داخله، بدأ يحس أن حب أبيه وأمه، وحب صديقه غوفندا أيضاً، لن يجعله سعيداً على الدوام أو يمنحه الراحة، لذلك بدأ البحث من خلال كتب (البراهما) وخاصة "أوبنيشادا ساما - فيدا" تلك التي تتحدث عن ذلك الشيء الداخلي، والمكتوب بعبارة "روحك هي العالم كله"، وغيرها من المعاني التي تقدمها البراهما (الذات العليا) اللامحدودة في عالم ظاهراتي محدود، وتوصل أخيراً إلى أن المنبع في قلبه هو "على المرء أن يجد المنبع في ينفسه ذاتها، وعليه أن يستحوذ عليها، وكل ما عدا هذا بحث وتوهان وخطأ" تلك كانت أفكار سدهارتا، وهذا عطشه، وحزنه.
