باشر سايكس أبحاثًا طبية عن أسباب أمراض العظام الوراثية، واكتشف بعدها أن دنا يمكن أن يستمر باقيًا في العظام القديمة، وكان أول من سجل استخلاص دنا القديم من عظام أثرية، وذلك في مجلة "نيتشر" 1989.
