يقدم الكاتب فى هذا العمل الأدبى نظرة على المسرح الفرنسى المعاصر ، إن الأدب المحض ليس إلا إحدى وسيلتين لتحقيق هذا التوحيد أما الوسيلة الأخرى فتتحقق بتأثيرات الوجوه والحركات والإيماءات والاصوات فهي وسيلة تنتمي إلى المجال الذهبي, وإلى المجال المادي في ذات الوقت, تؤديها الافكار كما تؤديها الاجسام وعلى ذلك فهو مجال مركب غير واضح تماماً. وبمقدار ما تعتمد عملية التوحيد على هذا المجال أو ذاك يمكن أن تميز نوعين متباينين من المسرح أو المسرحيات: مسرح الادباء أو الكتاب, وهو المسرح الذي تتحقق المتعة منه عن طريق القراءة, ثم مسرح المسرح, أو بمعنى آخر أوضح, المسرحيات التي تكتب للتمثيل وهي المسرحيات التي جعلت للمشاهدة أكثر مما جعلت للقراءة وترتبط بالعرض المادي أكثر مما تربط بعالم الخيال.
