هذا هو الجزء الثانى من رواية "ذو القناع الحديدى" التى يصور فيها الكاتب "ألكسندر دوماس الكبير" عصر لويس الرابع عشر بما فيه من أحداث عجيبة، وشجاعة، ومكايد ودسائس، وطموح ومغامرات، وفى هذا الجزء يصور لويس الرابع عشر وهو فى سجنه، ثم يبين كيف تخلص من السجن وتغلب على أخيه فيليب الذى حل محله على سرير الملك ليلة واحدة، وعلى الرغم من أنها تصور حياة ملك عظيم، إلا أن دوماس استطاع بفنه الراقى وخياله الرائع أن يضمنها غراماً قوياً عنيفاً لا يقل تضحية وعنفاً عن غرام قيس وليلى أو روميو وجولييت.. بل لعله أكثر روعة، وأشد عنفاً وأسى، فإن غرام الشاب الفارس راءول (الفيكونت دى براجلون) بالفتاة لويز دى لافاليير، قد بلغ الذروة فى اللوعة والتضحية والحرمان، وقد كان غراماً يائساً دفع راءول المسكين أن يلتمس الموت فى الحرب فراراً من بلائه وعذابه.
