ولد المعمتد فى مهاد الملك ، وعاش أميرا وملكا وكان شاعرا طبعوعا كما كان أبوه المعتضد شاعرا وجده شاعرا.
أغرم بالشعر وكان شعره صورة للحياة التي عاشها يترجم به عن عواطفه ويسجل فيه حسه ومشاعره وهى حياة تفيض بالبهجة والسرور في عهد صباه وشبابه ثم تلتوي به الحال فتنقلب تلك الحياة الراضية إلى حياة بؤس وعناء.

وقد أكثر المعتمد من قرض الشعر ، ولكنه مع هذه الكثرة لم يدون في ديوان، ولم يجمعه أحد ممن جاء بعده ، وإنما كان متفرقا منثورا في كتب الأدب وصحائف التاريخ ولقد قام المؤلفان بجمع ما تفرق من شعر المتعمد في هذا الديوان مننحو ثلاثين من الكتب والمراجع والأصول.. ويجمع شعر المعتمد بين كونه صورة لحياة أميرا أو ملك ثم هو من ناجية أخرى جزء من التماريخ وصورة لأحداث الأندلس في تلد الحقبة التى أعقبت سقوط الدولة الأموية.
