تعددت الكتب التي جمعت الشعر المنسوب إلى الإمام علي، وفي هذه الكتب مزايدات وإضافات كثيرة، وكان غرضها نسبة أكبر عدد من المقطوعات الشعرية إلى الإمام علي دون تمحيص، أو تفحيص. ويعد كتاب دستور معالم الحكم، ومأثور مكارم الشيم للإمام القاضي أبي عبدالله محمد بن سلامة القضاعي أقدم الكتب التي جمعت كلام الإمام علي نثرًا وشعرًا، والذي ينظر إلى ما جمعه من الشعر يجد أنه لم يحكم الذوق فيما نقله عن غيره، وإنما كان يهدف إلى الإكثار من الشعر المنسوب للإمام علي، وهو بهذا فتح المجال لمن جاء بعده من الرواة ومن قام بجمع الشعر أيضًا ابن عبد ربه في كتابه العقد الفردي، وهذا الرجل غير موثوق في رواية التاريخ، ولم يكن يمحص فيما نقله، وإنما غرضه تثقيف اللسان بما صح وما لم يصح.
وقد جمعنا في هذا الكتاب أشعار "علي بن أبي طالب"- كرم الله وجهه-، ونأمل من الباحثين أن يدققوا في صحة نسبة الشعر المنسوب للإمام علي، وليميزوا الخبيث من الطيب. ونحن جميعًا بفضل الله ومنه وكرمه سائرون على الدرب.
