عرض أهل الفلسفة والمنطق في بحوثهم إلى دراسة الألفاظ ودلالتها، وصادفوا في شأنها بعض العنت والمشقة حين حاولوا أن يصبوا تأملاتهم وخواطرهم في ألفاظ محددة الدلالة، فصالوا وجالوا بين الجزئي والكلي، والمفهوم والماصدق، وعقدوا الفصول الطوال في التعريف وحدوده، ومحاولة جعله جامعاً مانعاً كما يعبرون. ثم لم تسعفهم دائماً اللغات، وقصرت دلالة بعضها عن تحقيق ما يجول في أذهان هؤلاء الفلاسفة، وكأني بهم وقد تمنوا لو اصطنعوا الرموز في بحوثهم بدلاً من تلك الألفاظ المألوفة الشائعة ليتجنبوا ما يثور في كثير من الأحيان من جدل ونقاش حول حدود كلمة من الكلمات، أو دلالة لفظ من الألفاظ.
ونحن في كتابنا هذا نسلك مسلك اللغويين في بحث الدلالات، ونعالجها كما يعالج اللغوي الحديث ذلك الفرع من الدراسات اللغوية المسمى لدى الأوروبيين Semantics، وتلك دراسة حديثاً المولد نسبياً بدأها "بريل" في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر في رسالته، التي سماها Essai de Semantique، وفيها عنى ببحث الدلالة في بعض ألفاظ اللغات القديمة التي تنتمي إلى الفصيلة الهندية- الأوربية، كاليونانية واللاتينية والسنسكربتية، وخلص من بحثه إلى نتائج هامة، وقواعد عامة في حدود الدلالة وتطورها.
