أولَجَ راجي عبد الكريم رأس المفتاح الأصفر الصغير في ثقب القفل البارز، دَسَّه قليلاً ثم حرّك اصبعَيه تِّجاه اليَمين، فانفَرَجَ البابُ الصَغيرُ إثر طرقة صغيرة سمعها بالكاد .
أرسََلَ بَصره إلى الداخل، فتراءت رسالة مستلقية على ظهرها، ترك كفَّه المُعلَّقة بالمفتاح، ومدَّها إلى الجسد المُسجَّى على ظهره, سحبه كما يسحب الطفلُ عصفوراً من عشِّه وعلى عَجَلٍ دسها - دون أن ينظر إليها - في جوف كتاب يتأبَّطه، ثم عاود قفل الباب الصغير بحركةٍ ميكانيكيَّةٍ، وهَبَطَ دَرَج مبنى البريد مُتَّجِهاً صَوبَ موقف باص النقل الداخلي، عندذاك تراءى له حشدٌ كبيرٌ في الموقف، فأدرك مُجدَّداً بأنَّه كائنٌ موجودٌ في الحياة وأنه ينتمي إلى شريحةٍ يمكن لها أن تلتقي بسهولةٍ في هذا الموقف وفي أوقاتٍ مُحددة، وللتأكد من إحساسه بحقيقة أنه كائن مودجود حقاً في هذا المكان, تأمَّلَ وجوه نساء متقدِّمات في السن، خارجات للتو من دوائر حكومية، هي القامات البشرية ذاتها التي تتراكم في هذا الملاذ ذات الوقت باستمرار.
