أصل المشكلة أنه حوكم أمام لجنة خاصة، كانت رغبته في الاعتراف بما اقترفه تتعارض مع رفضه للانصياع للضغوط لإعلان توبته علناً أمام الجميع. قدم استقالته وتراجع للاختباء في بيت صغير منعزل من أملاك ابنته لوسي.
ولبعض من الوقت كانت لابنته ولأنغام الطبيعة المحيطة به تأثير على حياته حيث وازن دواخله من خلالهما، كان يساعد في تربية الكلاب ويوزع المنتجات في السوق، كما كان يساعد في معالجة الحيوانات لمصابة في أحد الملاجئ القريبة.
لكن توازنان السلطة في البلاد كانت تتهاوى مما أوقعه مع ابنته ليكونا ضحية لاعتداء بربري مخزٍ، إلا أن هذا الحدث هو ما جمعهما معاً وكان علاجاً لكل الخطاء التي سيطرت على علاقتهما.
إن رواية الخزي من الكتب الرائعة لأنها مؤثرة ونادرة، إنها باختصار تحفة لا تنسى.
