بمشقّةٍ بصم الأب أصابعه على زرّ الجرس، فتحت زوجته الرابعة والأخيرة الباب، وارتعبت حين رأت الدوائر الحمر الملتهبة تغزو وجهه ويديه، فضلاً عن أنّ أجزاء جسمه المغطاة بالملابس تبدو مدبّبة.
صرخت مذعورةً تاركةً إِيّاه، واستدعت أهلها ومعارفها الذين كانوا يحتلفون بعيد ميلادها، ولم تزل الشموع موقدة، لم يلمسه أحد مّمن جاؤوا راكضين على صراخ ابنتهم.
دخل الصالة، وكانوا على مسافةٍ منه خشية أن يصابوا بما أصيب به، قال والكلمات تخرج منه بصعوبة:
- ما هي المناسبة في لمتكم، فقد أصبحت أخشى اللمّات، فضلاً عن أنّني أخشى النار؟...
-ونحن أيضاً نخشى الإقتراب منك، لذا ندعوك أن تطفئ الشموع الثماني عشرة... أجابه أكثر من واحد منهم.
-كم؟ مرتعباً قال.
ارتفعت الدوائر الخمر في أجزاء جسده، بل أصبح هو كرةً جلديّة حمراء كبيرة.
جمعُ الأهل والمعارف، الذين باعدوا مسافاتهم عنه، حلت في أعينهم غشاوة الرؤية حينما شاهدوا، بضبابيّة ارتعبوا منها، النيران الشمعيّة الثماني عشرة المؤذنة ببلوغ زوجته الرابعة النضوج، ويحقّ لها تملك بيته الأخير وفق تنازله لها عنه.
شاهدوا النيران، مع فرارهم السريع من الصالة إلى الحديقة، تتوهّج في أماكن متفرّقةٍ من جلده الكرويّ الأحمر، ومن ثمّ سمعوا دويّ إنفجار الشموع المحرقة للكرة الجلديّة الحمراء وقد تحوّلت إلى أفواه ناريّة ماضغة بصوتٍ عالٍ اللحمَ المنتفخ.
كان جسده يتضاءل، وآخر ما التهمت الحيوانات النارية المفترسة رأسه المدبّب الذي كانت تسطع فيه حيناً، وتشحب حيناً آخر صور بؤسِ أبنائه وبناته المشرّدات في الشوارع، ومعهم الأمّ المظلومة الّتي توحّش معها العمر كله.
