يتحدث البطل عن حياته بعد إحالته على التقاعد برتبة لواء في الشرطة بعد بلوغه سن الخمسين. يروي البطل بلغة واضحة وقريبة إلى قلب وعقل القارئ عن التغييرات التي طرأت على حياته جراء تقاعده من إحساسه بالوحدة والفراغ وزوال هيبة منصبه التي كان يعتمد عليها في حياته حتى في شراء الخبر لبيته، تزامنت أحداث الرواية مع غزو العراق ومتابعة البطل لذلك الحدث على مدار أحداث الرواية.
