"لهذا وجدت نفسي في لحظة تشبه الإغماء، كنت من فرط الشعور بوحدتي، غارق في ذاتي، كأنما العالم في سماح أبدي، وكأن قدرتي على الحب لا حدود لها، لم تكن الحياة في قاموسي مرّة واحدة، بل مرّات متعددة، وكل لحظة في مضمونها تشكّل لي حياة جديدة، تنقلني من شعور إلى آخر، تجدد علاقتي بها حين يتطلب الأمر، كنت كلّما أحببت أن أرى العالم، أغمضت عينيّ، ثمّ حدّقت به، كنت أكتشف أشياء جمّة تبهرني، لكنني لم أكن أعرف كيف أستخرجها بشكل دائم، لقد كنت أريده إلى الأبد، ما لا أستطيع أن أحصل عليه، وحين يستمر الألم طويلاً، أدرك بأنها الرغبة التي تدفعني للتقدّم، لم أكن أحب أن أبقى شاهقاً وثابتاً، لقد كانت الشجرة تحزنني؛ لأنها لا تستطيع أن تنحني، إنه نوع من الخسارة أن تكون شامخاً إلى هذا الحد، الحد الذي لا يجعلك تنحني لالتقاط حظٍ سقط منك."
