"طبعاً أتيت ثانية إلى حوض السباحة، كان يجذبني إليه من السابق خصوصاً بعد أن استمتعت بالقساوة وحتى اكتفيت، إذ كنت أحس أن انعكاس المويجات على السقف الزجاجي، ورائحة المياه النظيفة، وبخاصة جسد جون المبلل تطهرني من كل شرّ. وأود أن أكون بمثل نقائه، وإن كنت أعلم أن ذلك لن يدوم طويلاً. في آخر الأمر، نقلت رييه إلى المستشفى. فبعد أن تقيأت كل ما بمعدتها، يبدو أنها نامت، جامدة مثل مومياء، ليومين متتاليين. ولدى سماعي الشروحات المفصلة التي روتها أمي اثر زياراتها اليومية إلى المستشفى لكي تعتني بها، كنت أقول في سري أن أي أثر للكرنب بالكريما الفاسدة قد زال الآن. ماذا كنت أفعل لو أنها ماتت؟ كيف كنت سأتدبر لنفسي تفسيراً منطقياً لما فعلت؟ لم أكن أدري، لم أكن أفهم من أين تأتي تلك الحاجة إلى الإيذاء".
بلغة سهلة، وبأسلوب سلس، تروي يوكو أوغاوا حكاية فتاة سقطت صريعة فراغ وأفكار عدوانية، وأفكار شيطانية دفعتها إلى محاولة إيذاء فتاة صغيرة من أطفال دار الأيتام التي يديرها والدها في تحليلاتها تنفذ يوكو أوغاوا إلى عمق النفس الإنسانية في محاولة لاستجلاء مثيرات مكامن الشر، وطريقة السيطرة عليها. وتعتبر هذه الرواية "حوض السباحة" من الروايات اليابانية المتميزة والتي اتخذت أسلوباً روائياً يابانياً معاصراً.
في "حوض السباحة" قصة ابنة مدير لإحدى دور الأيتام تعيش حياتها اليومية مع أولاد المؤسسة، كأنها، هي أيضاً، ليست لديها أسرة. ولكي تمضي أوقاتها تنصرف إلى متعتين تستعين بهما على تعويض الفراغ الذي يستقيم به عيشها: مراقبة مراهق خلال تمارين على رياضة الغطس في حوض السباحة، وافتعال ما يعذّب طفلة في الخامسة من عمرها.
