عن الرواية: "ومضت الأيام في مسارها الأبدي، وكاد أن ينقطع ما بينه وبين العالم الخارجي، وكفت قدرية عن زيارته بسبب التدهور والمرض، واستسلم لقدره فلم يعد يبالي بما كان ولا بما هو كائن ولا بما سوف يكون. وتحمل الساعات التي تقضيها راضية إلى جانبه بضيق شديد ولكنه احتفظ بأحزانه لنفسه، وآمن في الوقت نفسه بعدالتها. وظل على إيمانه الراسخ بمعتقداته المقدسة، بالحياة الشاقة المقدسة، بالجهاد والعذاب، بالأمل البعيد المتعال. وقال إن العجز أحياناً عن بلوغه لا يزعزع الثقة به، ولا المرض ولا الموت نفسه، ما دام ان الإصدار على المضي نحوه هو المسؤول عن وجود النبل والمعنى في الحياة. وكره كلمات التشجيع الجوفاء، وسلم بأن تقلده للوظيفة الجديدة حلم، كما سلم بأن نهوضه لا غباب ذرية حلم آخر، ومع ذلك فمن يعلم؟! وما يحز في نفسه ان كل شيء يمضي في سبيله دون مبالاة به. التعيين والترقي والإحالة إلى المعاش، الحب والزواج وحتى الطلاق، صراعات السياسة وشعاراتها المحمومة، تعاقب الليل والنهار... وها هي نداءات الباعة تنذر باقتراب الشتاء. ولعله من محاسن الصدف ان القبر الجديد قد حاز رضاه تحت ضوء الشمس."
