تدور أحداث الرواية حول الابن الذي يخرج غاضبًا، إثر نشوب خلاف بينه وبين والده، فيتجه إلى محطة القطار ليلا، وليس معه سوى حقيبة ملابس قديمة، وكتاب (صوت أبي العلاء)، فيضع حقيبته تحت رأسه، ويتمدد على أريكة في انتظار القطار.
وفي زحمة الركاب تُسرق الحقيبة، ويقفز السارق من القطار فيتبعه البطل لكنه لا يلحق به، ليجد البطل نفسه في قرية لا يعرف عنها شيئا، تبدأ فيها معاناة البحث عن حياة جديدة، يرفض خلالها التصريح باسمه، في محاولة للهروب من ماضيه، ثم تتبناه أسرة متوسطة الحال يطلقون عليه (سالم).
يتعرض سالم لأزمات نفسية حادة، فيتم احتجازه في المستشفى، وتتعرف عليه (وجدان) الممرضة التي رافقته طوال مدة احتجازه، حتى وقعت في حبه..
بعد خروجه من المستشفى يبدأ سالم في تكوين صداقات جديدة، يتعرف من خلالها على حكايات شباب القرية ضد سطوة العمدة، وابنه الضابط، والشيخ رضا، وكاهن الكنيسة.
