نشر الكتاب (حضارة الهند) لأول مرة في حوالي عام 1900 في لندن، ويعرض الكتاب تاريخ الحضارة الهندية من العصر الفيدي، أي منذ حوالي عام 2000 قبل الميلاد، إلى عصر نهاية سيادة الماهراتا في حوالي عام 1818، ويعرض النواحي الاجتماعية والسياسية والدينية والثقافية للهنود، ويحدثنا عن نظم الحكم والديانات المختلفة في الهند ببعض التفصيل، ويعرض أيضاً بعض الصور التوضيحية لأماكن ذات أهمية حضارية في الهند.
تم تأليف الكتاب في ظل الاحتلال البريطاني للهند، ولذلك لم يذكر الكاتب الكثير عن هذه الظروف، وتعارض آراءه حول بعض الحكام آراء المؤرخين الغربيين، وقد تختلف هذه الآراء من مؤرخ لآخر، وهو يعرض بتفاصيل ويعطينا معلومات ثرية والكثير من الأرقام فيما يخص الظروف الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والدينية في الهند.
