يتناول هذا الكتاب حضارة الهنود في أمريكا الوسطى والجنوبية والمكسيك مما عرف في أذهان الناس بحضارات المايا والأزنك والانكا مع كل ما مثلته هذه الحضارات من عظمة وتوهج في فنون البناء والنحت والنقش والصياغة والخزف والأدب والكتابة الهروغليفية والحساب والفلك والأساطير ثم ينتقل في القسم الثاني إلى حديث طويل عن تأثير هذه الثقافات بهنود أمريكا الشمالية الذين وجدهم الأوروبيون عن حصولهم في حالة من الصيد والالتقاط وبعض الزراعة ووجدوا في بعض مناطقهم وبخاصة على طرفي وادي الميسيسبي الأدني تلالأ صناعية MOUNDS تخفي تحتها آثار حضارة حاول المؤلف أن يردها إلى مؤثرات قدمت إلى هذه المناطق من ثقافة المايا والأزنك، كما حاول أن يرد كثيراً من العبادات والمقدسات والأفكار والعادات والأساطير إلى تلك الحضارة لأنها تدل على ذكرى بعيدة ما زالت تسمع أصداؤها في عقول هؤلاء الهنود الحمر وتصرفاتهم.
وقد اقتصر المترجم على ترجمة القسم الأول من الكتاب، وهو ما يهم القارئ العربي والذي يتعلق بالحضارات الأم: حضارات المايا والأزنك والانكا وذلك لأهميتها القصوى في تاريخ الإنسانية وما تطرحه من تساؤلات حول أصولها ومدى صلاتها بحضارات العالم القديم. على أن المؤلف استعجل في كتابة الأحداث فجعل الفصل الأول منه توطئة لما جاء في القسم الثاني من الكتاب واصفاً بعض المظاهر الحضارية والآثار العمرانية التي كشفت في أمريكا الشمالية مشيراً إلى أن هذه الحضارة المتقدمة المندثرة لا بد أن تكون قد قامت بتأثير من حضارات الجنوب، وقراءة هذا الفصل تعطي فكرة للقارئ عما أهملت ترجمته من الكتاب.
