عشية الحرب العالمية الأولى، كان هناك جندي شاب فقير من جماعة الحرامة قد وقع في غرام ابنة ثري نمساوي، وقد قوبلت هذه العاطفة المجنونة بغضب شديد من المجتمع وبالفعل انتهى هذا الحب المستحيل نهاية مأساوية.
ولد "ستيفان زفايج" في "فيينا" عاصمة "النمسا" في عام 1881 وتلقى تعليمه في "النمسا" و"فرنسا" و"ألمانيا" ثم استقر في مدينة "سالزبورح" بـ"النمسا" في عام 1913.
وقد اشتهر في بداية حياته كشاعر ومترجم لمسرحيات الكاتب المسرحي البريطاني ابن "جونسون" (1572-1637) –مؤلف المسرحية الخالدة "فيوليوني" أو "المنافق" ثم ذاع صيت "زفايج" في المرحلة التالية في حياته كمؤلف سير وتراجم حين كتب سيرة كل من: "بلزاك". و"ديكنز" والملكة الفرنسية "ماري أنطوانيت" زوجة ملك فرنسا "لويس السادس عشر".
وفي المرحلة التالية من حياته كتب "زفايج" عددا من القصص القصيرة قبل أن يزهل العالم بروايته الخالدة هذه في عام 1929 وقد عاش في "لندن" من عام 1934 حتى عام 1940، واكتسب الجنسية البريطانية، ثم هاجر بعد ذلك إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية" ومنها إلى "البرازيل" حيث مات منحراً في عام 1942 عن (61 عاما)، وفي العام التالي 1943 نشرت سيرته الذاتية بقلمه بعنوان "عالم الأمس".
