قبل أيّام من وفاته سئل حسين: "لو منحتَ عمراً إضافياً لتكتب شيئاً ما، فماذا ستكتب؟ أجاب: سأكتب الجزء الثاني من حجر الورد... أعتقد أنّ حجر الورد هو أكثر النصوص الّتي كتبتها صعوبةً.
هذا الحجر تمّ إكتشافه في مصر عام 1799، وبحلّ شفرات النقوش الّتي كانت عليه، تمّ إكتشاف الهيروغليفيّة، لقد كان قصدي من الديوان أن أكتب نصاً حول هيروغليفيّة الذات الإنسانيّة".
في حجر الورد كان البرغوثي محكوماً برؤيا تشكيليّة منجزةٍ سلفاً في ذهنه تمّت ترجمتها إلى نصٍّ شعريّ، كان يرغب في التعامل مع اللغة بمهارةِ مصمّم الأزياء الّذي ينتقي أصناف القماش وألوانه ليصل إلى نتيجةٍ ربّما لا تكاد تكون محسوبةً.
يقول البرغوثي: "إنّك تبحث عن نتيجةٍ غير مخطّطةٍ وغير محدوسٍ بها، وهذا الأمر مهمّ جداً، لكنّ الأكثر اهميّة هو أن تحسن قراءة النتيجة الّتي انتهيت بها، يجب عليك النظر لكلّ وصلةٍ وفصلةٍ بين جملك الشعريّة...".
