"بعد أن أصبح الجوال جاهزاً في يدها إستأذنت منه بعد فترة للذهاب الى دورة المياه، وهناك هاتفت "نوّاف" فوراً: ما إن سمعت صوته حتى تملكها حبها له فبادرته بعبارات الشوق والعذاب في بعده. قال بصوت يصدر من أعماق جراح ما حدث لها يسألها بلوعة:" ريناد خلاص تزوجت"!. لقد أرغموني، أنت تعرف كل شيئ، ماذا أفعل؟ قل لي ماذا بيدي لأفعله؟ ". صمت لحظة ثم قال: أين أنت الآن؟ قالت وهي تحاول عدم البكاء: في المطار. شعر وكأن حجراً ثقيلاً يضغط على قلبه، ثم قال: ريناد.. هذا زوجك وأنت معه الآن لا مكان لي بينكما.
إجتاحتها الدموع تبكي وهي تقول: أنا آسفة ماذا أفعل؟ أرجوك ليس بيدي حيلة. ردّ بحزم وكأنه يريد إنهاء كل شيئ بينهما: ريناد، حبنا قصة جميلة إنتهت بزواجك، لا خيار لنا الآن سوى أن تكملي طريقك وتنسيني، وفقك الله، مع السلامة. أحرقها رده فجثت على الأرض تبكي وتبكي بلا توقف كطفل صغير يعبر عن ألمه بدون أن يضع إعتباراً لمن حوله. وبعد دقائق رنّ جوالها كان بدر على الخط. لم ترد على إتصاله، وقامت بغسل وجهها وهي تمشي كمن تمشي للمرة الأولى بعد عملية شدت فيها أشلاء بطنها.
حاولت السيطرة على إنفعالها، لكن عباراتها أبت أن تتوقف، فوضعت غطاء العباءة على وجهها حتى لا يلاحظ دموعها وذهبت للجلوس في المقعد الذي بجانبه. سألها إن كانت تريد قهوة، فأشارت برأسها موافقة، في محاولة لعدم التحدث، أحضر كوبين من القهوة مع ماء، شربت الماء كمن يروي عطش الصحارى. حان موعد الصعود الى الطائرة، وما إن بدأت تمشي في معبر المسافرين حتى نظرت خلفها وكأنها تودع غرامها وتوصيه بقلبها الذي أصبح ملكاً له وحده.
تدور أحداث الرواية حول علاقة عاطفية شفافة وصادقة بين رينارد و إبن عمها نواف والذي أطاح بها إرث عائلي كان السبب في عداء الإخوة مما أدى الى الفرقة بينها. تحاول الروائية من خلال السرد الروائي الكشف عن العادات والتقاليد والخصومات والرسائل التي تلقي بظلالها على المناخ الإجتماعي العام والتي تؤجج الخصومات ملقية بظلالها على العلاقات بين الأولاد الذين يدفعون ضريبة أهاليهم غالباً.
