يوجد الكيروجين في الصخور الرسوبیة وھو عبارة عن مادة عضویة غير ناضجة. عند إرتفاع درجة حرارة تحت سطح الارض يتحلل الكيروجين منتجا النفط والغاز. تقريبا 90% من المواد العضوية في الصخور الرسوبیة موجودة في صورة كيروجين، ولذلك في قامت العديد من الدول الصناعية باجراء عملية نضوج صناعي (تسخين صناعي) للكيروجين للحصول على النفط. للأسف أن معظم المراجع العربية المختصة بصناعة النفط والغاز تحدثت بشكل موجز عن الكيروجين، أي لا توجد مراجع عربية مفصلة عن هذه المادة. هذا الكتاب يعتبر أول كتاب عربي يشرح بالتفصيل جيوكيمياء الكيروجين. المواضيع التي تم تناولها في هذا الكتاب هي كالتالي:
1) المواد العضوية.
2) تكوين وتركيب الكيروجين.
3) الماسيرال.
4) أنواع الكيروجين.
5) النضوج الصناعي للكيروجين.
