كتبت هذه المسرحية رداً على أدب من نوعية مغايرة بدأ بالظهور حوالي عام 1925 وكان يشوه موضوعاً مهماً ونبيلاً إذ يضعه برمته على المستوى الشهواني الجسدي. وإليكم موجزاً بسيطاً للفكرة الرئيسية في "جنوب":
عشية حرب الانفصال، ثمة ملازم أميركي يفضي بمكنونات نفسه وبحبه العارم لشاب لم يكن يعرف إلا اسمه. وعندئذ يستبد به الخوف والهلع، لكنه يفلح في السيطرة عليهما. وفي محاولة للفرار من قدره، يطلب يد فتاة، هي أنجيلينا، التي لم يكن يعيرها حتى ذلك الحين سوى القليل من الاهتمام، وهكذا يتكشف بوضوح أنه ليس مغرماً بها، الأمر الذي عبر عنه ثلاثة أشخاص، كل بطريقته: أنجيلينا في بادئ الأمر، ومن ثم والدها وأخيراً جيمي، الصبي الذي بلغ الرابعة عشر من عمره ويتكلم ببراءة ودون مواربة. ويحاول الملازم فيشيفسكي الاعتراف بهواه لمن هو موضوع هذا الهوى، بيد أنه لا يتوصل إلى ذلك تماماً، فيكرر سلوك واحد من أسلافه في حالة مماثلة، ويسعى إلى قتل إريك ماك كلور. ولكي يسوقه إلى مبارزة، فإنه يشتمه ويصفعه، لكنه، عند النزال بينهما، يقدم نفسه ضحية للرجل الذي جعل منه خصماً ويلقي مصرعه على يديه.
مسرحية "جنوب"، لا تكتسب أهميتها من مؤلفها، جوليان غرين، وحسب -على أهميته الكبيرة- بل من كونها تحاول إعادة الاعتبار للتراجيدي في فترة حديثة، ومن جرأتها على تناول موضوع قد يضعه كثيرون في دائرة المحرم.
هكذا تجمع "جنوب" بين كل هذه الأشياء على خلفية من الحرب الأهلية الأميركية -مع أن غرين فرنسي- وعلاقات السود والبيض، وبذلك يصيب أهدافاً كثيرة في وقت واحد.
