وقفت أدريين تنظر إلى المقبرة، ويداها معقودتان خلف ظهرها. كانوا عند آل موزيرا، يطلقون تلك التسمية على مجموعة من اثنتي عشرة صورة معلّقة فوق طاولة جانبية في قاعة الطعام، وقد صُفّ بعضها إلى جانب البعض الآخر، لتغطي جانباً بحاله من الخزانة. كانت سبع من بينها لآل موزيرا، وثلاث لآل سير واثنتان لآل ليكوييه، وهم أعضاء أسرتين نسيبتين لآل موزيرا، وكلّهم ماتوا. وإذا ما استثنينا صورة بالألوان سوف نتناولها بالكلام من بعد، فهي من تلك الصّوَر الفوتوغرافية على نحو ما كانوا يفعلون قبل خمسة وعشرين عاماً، صُوَرٌ فجّة وأمينة، يظهر فيها الوجه على خلفية بيضاء، من غير أن يأتي ظلّ رحيم فيلطّف من عيوبه، وحيث الحقيقة وحدها تنطق بلغتها القاسية. كان يسيراً تمييز آل موزيرا عن آل سير وليكوييه. فجبهتهم ضيّقة وقسماتهم بارزة، ويعلو محياهم شيء من العزيمة، فتعوّد الناس على القول إنّهم أشبه بالزعماء. كانوا، رجالاً ونساءً، يحدّقون ناظرين إلى أمام بالنظرة شبه العدائية التي يتحلّى بها ذوو الضمائر النقيّة. حتى لكأنّ لسان حالهم يقول: "وأنتم، أتدرون ما القلبُ المطمئنّ الذي لا تتسارع دقاته أبداً، قلبٌ لا يعرف الخوف ولا القلق وإنّما يقيس فرحه، ويستقبل ألمه في سكينة، لأنّه لا يندم على شيء؟" فيهم الشيب وفيهم الشباب، فهذه الصبيّة التي يلتفّ رأسها بوشاح قد ماتت قبل الثلاثين، وكانت راهبة في رهبانية نشيطة. إنّ خدّيها مسبلان وذقنها ملتوية بشدة مثل هذا العجوز ذي الوشاح، ولا ريب في أنّ هذه المرأة أمّها، بفمها الضنين وعينيها المتيقّظتين كأنما تُجريان حساباً.
