تناول الكتاب دراسة ميناء طرابلس كأحد موضوعات جغرافية النقل ، وذلك من خلال التعرف على العوامل الطبيعية والبشرية التي جعلته ميناء الدولة الرئيس منذ مئات السنين ، وكذلك الظروف السياسية والاقتصادية التي شهدها في الماضي ويشهدها في الحاضر ، وتأثيرها السلبي أو الإيجابي على حركة السفن والبضائع بالميناء وعلى مناطق نفوذه داخل الدولة ، وستركز الدراسة على النشاط التجاري بالميناء في الفترة الممتدة من 1951-2002م ، أي منذ الاستقلال وتكّون دولة ليبيا الحديثة وحتى بداية القرن الواحد والعشرين ، كما ستهتم الدراسة بإبراز مكونات الميناء وتجهيزاته الأرضية والبحرية ، وما تعترضه من مشكلات تؤثر سلباً على حركة تداول البضائع بالميناء
