ثورنتون وايلدر (17 أبريل 1897 - 7 ديسمبر 1975)، يعتبر من أبرز كتاب المسرح الأمريكي خلال الفترة بين 1927 حين نشر مسرحيته الأولى «النفير سوف يصدح»، وحتى عام 1962 حين كتب مسرحية رائعة عن سان فرانسوا الإسيزي.
وبلغ إنتاج وايلدر حوالى 40 مسرحية، من أبرزها «بلدتنا» و «هربنا بجلدنا» و «عشاء الميلاد الطويل»...
وأعماله تميزت بنفحة شعرية لا تخلو من يأس، مع إيمان عميق بالإنسان، خارج إطار ضغوط الحياة اليومية.

تقدم هذه الرواية بأيدى الروائى الامريكى ثورنتن وايلدر وهو روائي وكاتب مسرحيات فاز بثلاث جوائز بوليتزر. قد نال تلك الجوائز على روايته هذه وعلى مسرحيتين (مدينتنا وجلد أسناننا) كذلك نال جائزة الرواية الوطنية على روايته (اليوم الثامن).
في هذه الرواية يحاول وايلدر أن يسلط الضوء على السؤال الأزلي هل المصير أمر عشوائي أم أنه مقدر وتتحكم به قوة عليا؟ والبحث عن تلك القوة العليا.
الرواية تحتوي على خمسة أجزاء، الجزء الأول يركز على انهيار الجسر في عام 1714 وسقوط خمسة أشخاص ووفاتهم. الجزء الثاني والثالث والرابع يتمركزوا حول حياة الأشخاص الذين ماتوا والبحث عن الحكمة من موتهم. أما الجزء الأخير فيركز على ما حدث بعد تلك الحادثة.
كتب جوناثان ياردلي في مجلة الواشنتن بوست تعليقًا على هذه الرواية؛ فقال:
(لقد ذهلت تمامًا ليس فقط بطريقة وايلدر في معالجة الفكرة الرئيسية التي طرحها ولكن كذلك بقوة وثراء أسلوبه النثري) .
