بين أسطر هذه الرواية يقرر الكاتب تتبع آثار أجداده، ويختار بالتحديد جده الذي شارك في الثورة الفرنسية وحارب في صفوف الثوار. يعود إلى القرن الـ18 ويمسح واقع الثورات التي شكلت منعطفات تاريخية وأحدثت تغييرات كبيرة في حياة الناس، ورسمت اصطفافات جديدة كانت تفرضها كل مرحلة، يولي العناية بشخصيات كانت هامشية في محاولة لتصديرها وتقديرها. ينتقل ببطله جان مارو من مكان لآخر: “فرنسا، وجزيرة موريس، وبريطانيا، والجزائر، والمكسيك، مستعرضا أحداثا تاريخية مهمة، ويستعيد تاريخ جده الأكبر جان أود مارو الذي كان أول المهاجرين إلى جزيرة موريس والذي تطوع في الثورة الفرنسية. الجد الذي شارك في الثورة، وجاهر بأفكاره الدينية، لم يتخل عن شخصيته المستقلة ولم ينخرط ضمن الجموع المنقادة وراء الشعارات، يستاء من الأوضاع، يقرر الرحيل إلى جزيرة موريس، يكتب تفاصيل رحلته بعد أن باتت الحياة في باريس قاسية، ولا سيما بعد حصارها من قبل الإنجليز.
