دَفعَتْ تونس (كسائرِ دُولِ الوَطنِ العَربيِّ التي ابتُلِيتْ بالاسْتِعمار) الثَّمنَ غاليًا حتَّى تَحصُلَ عَلى استقلالِها مِنَ المُحتلِّ الفَرنسي، ولِهَذا قِصةٌ طَويلةٌ بَدأَتْ مُنذُ احتِلالِ فرنسا لِلجَزائِر؛ حيثُ أرادَ المُحتلُّ تَثبيتَ أقْدامِه أكثرَ في المَغربِ العَربي؛ فطَفِقَ يَتدخَّلُ في الشُّئونِ الداخِليةِ لِلمَمْلكةِ التونسية، مُتذرِّعًا بدَعاوَى شَتَّى، حتَّى كانَ الاحتلالُ الكامِلُ في عامِ ١٨٨١م، مَصحُوبًا بِعَملياتِ شَحنٍ للمُستعمِرِينَ الفَرنسيِّينَ الذينَ لَمْ يَكْتفُوا بأنْ يُنازِعوا أهلَ البِلادِ حُقوقَهُم، بل طَغَوْا واستحلُّوا لِأنفُسِهِم ما هُو فَوقَ حاجَتِهم مِن ثَرَواتِ تونس الخَضْراء؛ فاقتطعَتْ لَهُم حُكومةُ الاحْتِلالِ المَزارِعَ الخَصِبةَ الوَاسِعة، وقدَّمتْ لَهُم الامْتِيازاتِ التِّجارِيةَ المُختلِفة، بَينَما عضَّتِ الفَاقةُ التونسيِّينَ وساءَتْ أَحْوالُهُم، بِجانِبِ ما لَاقَوْه مِن هَوانٍ وظُلمٍ عَلى أَيْدِي جُندِ المُستعمِر؛ فانْتظَمُوا في صُفوفِ الثَّوْرةِ يَتبادَلونَ عَلمَ تونسَ الحُرَّةِ الَّذي اكتسَبَ لَونَه مِن دِماءِ الشُّهَداءِ الزَّكِية.
