وعزا ابن الجوزي جلَّ أسباب انتشار الضلال في الدنيا و أسباب تسرب هذه الجهالات لنفوس البشر إلى إبليس و لبسه و دسه و تدليسه. بيَّن الشبه التي لبّس إبليس بها على أصناف الناس و ذلك بالبحث و التنقيب و الانتقاد مع كشف صحيح المسائل و فاسدها مستنداً إلى الأدلة النقلية و العقلية و الأمثلة التي يشهد لها الحس و الوجدان .
وهناك عدة اجتهادات لتحقيق هذا الكتاب وتنقيحه مما فيه من الأسانيد التي لا تثبت والقصص غير الصحيحة
