لم نستطع اللحاق بالخال، كان قد ابتعد وابتعد، وظللنا نرقبه وهو يصعد الجبل المقابل. كان يبدو بحجم رأس الدبوس. وظل يبتعد ويبتعد حتى اختفى تماماً... قال المشط: إنه يعود إلى هناك مثلما تعود الطيور إلى أعشاشها. قال ذلك، وخلع نظارتها فمسح دمعة ثم أعاد النظارة... رجعنا صامتين... وكانت البراري تمتد حولنا مترامية الأطراف. كانت البراري صامتة مثلنا.
ومررنا قرب تلك الشجيرات الوحشية التي تتدلى منها ثمار تفاح المجانين. توقفنا أمامها لحظة فحكى المشط كلاماً مع نفسه... وظل المشط يحدث نفسه بصوت خافت... ولعله قال ما معناه أنه سيذهب ذات يوم إلى هناك، إلى وطننا المحتل".
يحيى يخلف وتفاح المجانين ووطن غاب وراء أفق الغدر ولكنه لم يغب عن صفحات الوجدان. والخاطر ينشد في كل يوم... في كل ساعة... بل في كل لحظة أناشيد عودة تفجرها ذكريات وصور، تفجرها أسماء ساكنة في جرح الفؤاد تسطر رواية تستلهم فيها حاضراً وذكريات أرض لا بد أن تعود.
