فرج جبران: كاتِبٌ وصَحَافيٌّ ومُتَرجِم، كانَ يَعمَلُ مَوظَّفًا حُكُومِيًّا في دِيوانِ المُحاسَبةِ بالقاهِرة، ولكِنَّهُ كانَ يَهوَى الصَّحافةَ والأَدَب.
اشتَرَكَ فرج جبران في إِصْدارِ مَجلَّةِ «الشُّعلَة» معَ «محمد علي حماد»، واشترَكَ في تَحْريرِ «آخِر سَاعَة» مُنْذُ نَشْأتِها، وتَرجَمَ كَثِيرًا مِنَ القِصَصِ والرِّواياتِ عَنِ اللُّغَةِ الفَرَنسيَّة، ثُمَّ اتَّجهَ بعْدَ الحرْبِ العالَميَّةِ الثانِيةِ إِلى الرِّحلاتِ والكِتابةِ عَنِ الطَّرائِفِ والغَرائِبِ فِي البِلَادِ الَّتي يَزُورُها، حتَّى لقِيَ حَتْفَه فِي إِحْدى الطَّائِراتِ بعْدَ إِقْلاعِها مِن إيطاليا فِي طَرِيقِها إِلى القاهِرةِ عامَ ١٩٦٠م؛ حيْثُ اخْتَفتِ الطَّائِرةُ فوْقَ البَحْرِ الأَبْيضِ المُتوسِّطِ ولَمْ يُعثَرْ لَها أَوْ لِرُكَّابِها عَلى أَثَر.
تَرَكَ جبران مُؤلَّفاتٍ ومُترجَماتٍ عِدَّة، مِن بَيْنِها: «غَرَام المُلُوك»، و«تَعالَ مَعِي إِلى أُورُوبا»، و«ابْن بَطُّوطةِ الثَّانِي»، وغَيْرُها. وقَدْ كانَتْ وَظِيفتُه الحُكوميَّةُ تُلزِمُه بعَدمِ التَّوْقِيعِ باسْمِهِ فِي بَعْضِ الأَحْيان، فاخْتارَ لنَفسِهِ اسْمًا مُسْتعارًا هُوَ «فَجْر»؛ وهُوَ مُشتَقٌّ مِن اسْمِهِ الكامِل.

أصبحَ السَّفرُ والانتقالُ من بلدٍ لآخَرَ في زمنِنا هذا أمرًا متاحًا يسَّرَه التقدمُ الكبيرُ في وسائلِ المُواصلات، وكذلك ترحيبُ الحكوماتِ بالسائحين؛ فتقاربتِ الشعوبُ وبدأَ جليدُ الأحقادِ في الذوبان. والكِتابُ الذي بين يدَيِ القارئِ هو خلاصةُ أسفارٍ ورحلاتٍ قامَ بها المؤلفُ لدولِ القارةِ الأوروبيةِ (ما عدا روسيا) في منتصفِ القرنِ العشرين، فأبهرَته طبيعتُها الخلَّابةُ ولفتَ نظرَه ما عليه أهلُها من نظامٍ وحبٍّ للعمل، فنفَضوا غبارَ مَعاركِ الحربِ الهتلريةِ وأصمُّوا الآذانَ عن دعواتِ الانتقام، وقرَّروا التفرغَ لإعادةِ بناءِ ما هدَمته آلةُ الحرب، فلمَّا جنَحوا للسِّلمِ وجَّهوا جُلَّ طاقاتِهم لمجالاتِ الصحةِ والتعليمِ وتنميةِ اقتصادِهم المُنهَك، فظهرتِ النتائجُ سريعًا ولمسَها الكاتبُ بنفسِه في أثناءِ زياراتِه لتلك الدُّول؛ حيث ارتفعتْ مستوياتُ معيشةِ المُواطن، كما أصبحت تلك البلادُ قِبلةً سياحيةً عالَمية.
