كتاب تركيا والشرق الاوسط تأليف فيليب روبنس، يقول الكاتب عن هذه الدراسة: "نشأت هذه الدراسة عن رغبة بسد ثغيرة أدبية في السياسية الحالية. وبصورة أدق، تعود هذه الدراسة إلى عدد من الأسئلة التي طرحت حول اهتمامات وسياسات تركيا في إطار عمل سابق تناول الحرب الإيرانية العراقية. ولم يؤد وقف إطلاق النار في آب 1988 إلى وقف طرح مثل هذه الأسئلة، إذ أن قضايا المياه، والأكراد وانتشار الروحية الإسلامية كانت كلها تؤدي إلى توثيق ارتباط تركيا بنظام الدول في الشرق الأوسط. ثم جاءت أزمة الخليج التي نشأت عن غزو العراق للكويت سنة 1990 تؤكد مرة أخرى على الدور التركي الهام في المنطقة. ولئن كانت التغيرات التي تقع في أوروبا وفي الاتحاد السوفياتي لا تدفع إلى إعادة توجيه أنظار تركيا بصورة أوثق نحو تقع في أوروبا وفي الاتحاد السوفياتي لا تدفع إلى إعادة توجيه أنظار تركيا بصورة أوثق نحو الشرق الأوسط، فإن انبعاث الازدهار في الخليج قائم على أساس ارتفاع أكيد في سوق النفط، لا بد له حين يتحقق، أن يفعل ذلك بكل تأكيد".
