من العلماء مثلاً من أستند في تصنيفه إلى الاهتمامات الغالبة لدى الطفل: مرحلة الطفولة المبكرة وهي التي تتسم بالإنصراف للنشاط اللعبي، مرحلة الدراسة الواعية، وهي التي يظهر فيها الميل إلى العمل بجانب النشاط اللعبي. وآخرون ذهبوا الى شرح المراحل على ضوء العلاقات الإجتماعية بين الطفل والمحيط: مرحلة الصلة الإجتماعية غير المعينة، حيث يكون التمييز بين الأفراد غير ثابت وضعيف، مرحلة التطور الإجتماعي، وتتميز بإندماج الطفل في الجماعة، المرحلة الواقعية، وفيها ضعف النزعة الذاتية لدى الطفل، ويأخذ الطفل بالاهتمام بالعالم الخارجي. ومن المظاهر الهامة في فترة الطفولة، القدرة على اكتساب أساليب التوافق الصحيح مع المحيط، وتلقي الخبرات والمهارات المختلفة، وتكوين العادات الإنفصالية نحو الآخرين. والطفل يحتاج إلى إمكانيات بيئية جيدة وجو إجتماعي حسن التنظيم ومليء بالخبرة والمواقف الحسنة. للأسرة ودور الحضانة ورياض الأطفال دور كبير في هذا المجال، وينبغي أن تراعيها. يرى علماء النفس، إن أي تفكير مستقبلي لبناء شخصية متكاملة ومتعددة الجوانب تنطلق أساساً من المراحل الأولى في عمر الطفل.
