إدوارد بيدج ميتشل: كاتبُ قصصٍ ومحرِّرٌ أمريكي، وُلِد في عام ١٨٥٢، ويُعَد من الشخصيات الرئيسية في تطوُّر أدب الخيال العلمي. وُصِف لاحقًا بأنه «العملاق المفقود في أدب الخيال العلمي الأمريكي»؛ إذ كتب الكثيرَ من قصص الخيال العلمي في الفترة الممتدة من سبعينيات القرن التاسع عشر إلى تسعينياته، وجميعها تقريبًا نُشِرت في صحيفة «ذا صن» اليومية في نيويورك، دونَ الكشف عن هُويته.
ضمَّت كتاباته العديدَ من التنبُّؤات التكنولوجية والاجتماعية التي كانت جريئةً وسابقةً لعصرها، ومن بين ذلك التدفئة الكهربائية، وتجميد البشر مؤقتًا، وآلة السَّفَر عبر الزمن، والسَّفَر بسرعةٍ أكبر من سرعة الضوء، وحق الاقتراع للنساء الأمريكيات، والتزاوُج بين الأعراق. وتشتمل قصصُه الخيالية على كلِّ ما هو غامض وغريب، بما في ذلك الأشباح، والشيطان، والماسوشية، وتحوُّل الأجسام غير الحية إلى كائناتٍ حية، وغير ذلك كثير.

شابٌّ وفَتاةٌ واقِعانِ فِي الغَرَام، غَيرَ أنَّ خِلافًا فِكريًّا وفَلسَفيًّا بَينَ الشابِّ ووالِدِ مَحْبوبتِه يَحُولُ دَونَ اقْتِرانِهما؛ إذْ يَتشبَّثُ كلٌّ مِنهُما بمَوقِفِه ولَا يَرغَبُ فِي أنْ يَتزَحزحَ عَنْه قَيدَ أَنْمُلة. أمَّا الفَتَاة، فعَلى الرَّغمِ مِن هُيامِها بحَبِيبِها، فإنَّها تُقرِّرُ بحَسْمٍ ألَّا تَفعَلَ شَيئًا لَا يَرضَى عَنْه والِدُها، ولَكِنَّ الشابَّ يَكتشِفُ مُصادَفةً أنَّ أُسْتاذَه بالجَامِعة، البرُوفِيسُور الأَلْمانِيَّ شفانك، يَستطِيعُ أنْ يُجرِيَ لَه جِراحةً دِماغِيةً تُؤدِّي إلى تَغييرِ مُعتقَداتِه. فهَلْ يُمكِنُ أنْ يَكونَ هَذا صَحِيحًا؟ هَل يُمكِنُ تَغييرُ المُعتقَداتِ والمُيولِ والآراءِ بعَملِيةٍ جِراحِية؟ يُقرِّرُ ستراوت الشابُّ أنْ يَخضَعَ لِلْعملِيةِ مِن أَجلِ الفَوزِ بمَحبُوبتِه، لكِنْ تَحدُثُ بَعضُ المُفاجَآتِ وتَسِيرُ الأَحْداثُ عَلَى نَحوٍ غَيرِ مُتوقَّع. تُرَى، كَيفَ ستَنتهِي قِصةُ العاشِقَيْن، وهَلْ يَجْمعُهما القَدَرُ فِي النِّهايةِ أمْ يُفرِّقُهما إلى الأَبَد؟
