يقسم كارل بروكلمان كتابه تاريخ الأدب العربى إلى عشرة أجزاء ، يتناولها كما يلى
الجزء الأول يتحدث فيه عن العصر الجاهلي ، الجزء الثاني عن العصر الإسلامي
وفى الجزء الثالث يقدم العصر العباسي الأول أما الجزء الرابع فيتحدث فيه عن العصر العباسي الثاني لينهى معه عصر العباسين بما حمله من كبوات وازدهارات وينتقل الى الجزء الخامس الذى تحدث فيه عن الأدب فى الجزيرة العربية والعراق وإيران وبالجزء السادس ينتقل الى الشام ليصل منها الى مصر فى الجزء السابع
و فى الجزء الثامن تحدث كارل بروكلمان عن الأندلس وأدبها وما حملته من نهض أدبية عالمية والذى انعكس على ليبيا وتونس وصقلية والتى تحدث عنهم فى الجزء التاسع لينهى كتابه بالجزء العاشر عن الجزائر المغرب الأقصى موريتانيا والسودان.
