محمد علي اليوسفي أديب تونسي من مواليد مدينة باجة يوم 3 مارس 1950 درس المرحلتين الابتدائية والثانوية بتونس ثم سافر إلى الشرق العربي حيث أتم دراسته الجامعية في جامعة دمشق وتخرج في قسم الفلسفة والعلوم الاجتماعية. تابع الدراسات العليا في الاختصاص ذاته بـ الجامعة اللبنانية خلال الحرب الأهلية.وفي الأثناء مارس الترجمة والكتابة والصحافة الثقافية في أبرز الصحف والمجلات السورية واللبنانية والفلسطينية.عاد إلى تونس ليستقر بها بعد عشرين عاما أمضى ثمانية منها في جزيرة قبرص.

"أعترف بأني كنت بعيداً عنها برغم التزامي بزيارتها ومواساتها فيما بعد. وحتى في غيبوبتها سيعت إليها لأثبت لنفسي عليها سلطة ما، كنت قد ضعت معها في متاهات معقدة أوقعتني فيها علاقاتها وصلاتها بالكثير من الأجانب، وتأثرها بمن تعاشرهم، وكذلك رغبتها الدائمة في فرض شخصيتها واستقلالها. كل ذلك زاد في تسلطي الذي تبين فيما بعد أنه مجرد تسلط وهي. مع أنها كانت تنظر مني كل شيء: أن أمسك بيدها وأمهد لها كل طريق، بدأت-في أيام الحب الأولى وليالي الدهشة-بحكايات طفولتها، فامتلكتها-أو توهمت-منذ يوم ولادتها. روت لي مغامراتها ما قصصتها، سيطرتُ على ماضيها. وكثيراً ما عمدتُ إلى ابتزاز هابه. عدّدت وجوهها وامتكلت أنفاسها... ومع ذلك تبين لي الآن، أنني لم أمسك بخيوط اللعبة كما ينبغي، وأنا الذي ادّعيت بأنني المؤلف الأول".
