تدور أحداث الرواية فما بعد هزيمة التل الكبير التي لحقت بعرابي ورفاقه وخلفت الكثير من الآلم والفقد، حيث تحكي الرواية قصة أحمد مصطفى الشاب الذي افقدته الحرب والده بعد أن عاد منها وقد تغيرت شخصيته وانهزمت و اندحرت إثر الحرب فيموت من الحسرة، وينتج عن ذلك مزيدا من الانهزامية في شخصية أحمد، وكذلك فأن ما حدث يعزز بداخله كراهية عرابي ورفاقه باعتبارهم الذين كانوا سببا في فقد والده.
تتحول حياة أحمد لمأساة فينزوي ناحية حياة السكر والعربدة، وتسعى والدته إلى ابعاده عن القاهرة بكل ما فيها باعتبارها سببا من أسباب نكسته، فتوصي مديره بنظاره الري إبعاده إلى أكثر المناطق عن القاهرة، فيتم نقله كمفتش للري في إحدى نواحي محافظة البحيرة وذلك في عام 1911، وهناك يدخل أحمد عالم جديد تقوده سيدة انجليزية بقوانين مختلفه، وتفرض سيطرتها على الكل وتغذي مشاعر العداء بين عائلتي عوض وفرجاني بوسية الخواجة بشرى، وأمام هذا يقرر أحمد ان يخضع لتلك القوانين، ليجد نفسه مع مرور الوقت يقع في براثن السيدة الإنجليزية، ويخضع لها، وفي محاولاته للتملص منها يتعرف على زينب وتبدأ من ناحيته قصة حب لا يعرف مداها، وتتوالى الأحداث وأحمد يحاول أن يواجه العالم الجديد بقوانينه، كما أن ماضي والده لا يلبث أن يطارده أينما حل، فتبدأ سلسلة من الصراعات بعضها علني والآخر خفي، وكل واحد من الشخصيات يحاول أن يحمي عالمه الخاص به
