وصلت إلى المدينة باحثًا عن الظلال بجوار الأسوار التي تصطفُّ على جانبي الطريق، والتي تنبت وراءها الأشجار المرتفعة التي تُلقي بظلالها ونسائمها على المارة, كانت هذه هي المرة الأولى التي أسير فيها وحيدًا بين كل هؤلاء البشر, كنت أرى في أعينهم تلك النظرات التي يملؤها الخوف والرهبة، والتي اعتدتُ أن أراها في أعينهم باستمرار, أكملت سيري على الرصيف مجاورًا لتلك الأشجار التي تظلِّله ومع استنشاقي لنسائم الزهور والأشجار كانت رائحة اللحم المشوي تفوح من أحد المطاعم المجاورة لأسير تجاهه واقفًا أمامه والأمل يغمرني أن يعطيني أحدهم قطعةً من الدجاج أو اللحم المشوي, فأنا أشعر بالجوع والعطش, وما هي إلا لحظات حتى خرج أحدهم من المطعم مهرولًا تجاهي يحاول ضربي بتلك العصا التي يمسكها بيده, تفاديت ضربته وابتعدت عنه مهرولًا حتى اختفيت عن أنظاره بأحد الشوارع الجانبية، لم أعُد أقوى على السير.
