معرفی دو گرایش اصلی در تدوین حدیث و تبیین روش و اصول فكری و عقیدتی هر یك از آنهاست. نویسنده در آغاز به انگیزهها و عواملی اشاره میكند كه منجر به پیدایش و گسترش علم اصول شد و در این راه برخی از متقدمین و صاحبنظران اصلی آن را معرفی میكند. در ادامه به تحقیق در علت جدال محمد امین استرآبادی با اصولیانِ شیعه پرداخته و ضمن اشاره به محورهای اساسیِ اعتراض استرآبادی، به تحلیل و نقد آثار و آرایِ وی دست میزند سپس رویكرد ملا محسن فیض كاشانی، شیخ یوسف بحرانی و وحید بهبانی را در باره علم اصول، نقد و تفسیر میكند. بررسی دیدگاههای میرزا محمد اخباری و شیخ حرّ عاملی در زمینه حدیث و تحریف قرآن از جمله دیگر مباحث بعدی این اثر است. كتاب، با بیان تفارت آراء اصولی و اخباری و توصیف و احكام عملی از دیدگاه آنها به پایان میرسد.
