تبدأ قصة تأليف هذا الكتاب من خاطرة وردت على شيخ الإسلام تقي الدين علي بن عبد الكافي السبكي (ت756هـ)، في عِظم حق الوالدين على ولدهما، ثم بدا له أن يُذيّلها بالكلام على بر الوالدين وأحكامه الفقهية، لذا لم يصدّر كتابه بمقدمة؛ إذ الأمر كان في أوله خاطرة. وقد بدأ المصنف مباحث كتابه بذكر أدلة القرآن والسنة في فضل بر الوالدين، ثم ناقش كلام أهل العلم في موضوع كتابه في أربع مسائل، ومن دونها مسائل أخرى فرعية، وختم كتابه بالكلام على صلة الرحم. وقد اعتنى المحقق بكتابه غاية العناية؛ إذ اعتمد على النسخة التي بخط المؤلف نفسه، لتكون هذه أول طبعة تقدّم النصّ الصحيح الكامل لهذا الكتاب النفيس، مختتمةً بعدة فهارس فنية تكشف كنوز الكتاب للقارئ. ثم ذيّله المحقق برسالة «بر الوالدين» لولد المصنف الإمام تاج الدين السبكي (ت771هـ).
