الكتاب ترجمة للدراسة العميقة التي أعدها الباحث الفرنسي دمنيك فالرين عن التاريخ الاقتصادي لمدينة بجاية وتحديدا نشاط مينائها من تأسيس المدينة على يد الأمير الناصر بن علناس الحمادي إلى غاية استيلاء الأسبان عليها عام 1510م وهذا بالاعتماد على الوثائق اللاتينية والنصوص العربية. وقد بيّن الباحث كيف تطور نشاط الميناء واندماجه في الفضاء الاقتصادي المغاربي والمتوسطي بالرغم من الأزمات الطويلة التي عرفتها المنطقة، وكيف تمكن من استرجاع مكانته في بداية القرن الخامس عشر الميلادي
